Stage Fort Park

Gloucester’s first settlers based themselves on this land in 1623. They set up fishing stages and eventually a fort, which is today the oldest still-extant fort in Massachusetts. Today, there are several plaques and markers across the park commemmorating not only the Fort and it’s role in various wars, but also the induction of Gloucester as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1623.

In addition to being the oldest extant fort in Massachusetts, Gloucester’s Stage Fort Park covers 60 acres and features a playground, 2 beaches and ample open green space. In addition, the park includes a baseball field, basketball court, sand volleyball courts and tennis courts. Children and adults alike will love exploring the park’s old cannons overlooking the ocean and climbing “Tablet Rock,” a large rock with amazing views of the park, the ocean, and the city.

As well as its proximity to downtown Gloucester, with its wide variety of restaurants, Stage Fort Park has its own small restaurant and ice cream shop, as well as many picnic tables and outdoor grilling areas for ocean-side family meals. Stage Fort Park is one of the best vacation spots on the North Shore, and will be a highlight of your family vacation.
