Magnetite is a ferrous metal, so if you run a magnet through the sand, the black flakes of magnetite will adhere to it.
Brackenbury Beach is a great spot to bring any young, budding scientists in your family, as well as anyone who enjoys relaxing in the sun and swimming. Recently, shifting currents have diluted the sands’ magnetite content, but the magnet experiment still works. Please be advised that there is no lifeguard on duty and parking is extremely limited.
