Every year since 2002, Gloucester’s Stacy Boulevard is decorated with American flags in time for Memorial Day. The flags, purchased and donated by individuals and local businesses, stay up all summer and come down again after Labor Day. Volunteers oversee the project and install the flags, many of which are flown in honor or in memory of someone who served and are labeled with their names.
In addition to the Boulevard’s flag display, Gloucester has numerous sites that honor the brave men and women who served our country, across all branches of the armed services. There are memorials, plaques, and statues located throughout the city commemorating almost every war since the Revolutionary War. You can learn more about Gloucester’s military history and heroes by following the Gloucester Military Heritage & War Memorial Trail. This self-guided tour will take you throughout the city, from the A Piatt Andrew Bridge (which you’ll cross coming into Gloucester) into downtown and includes neighborhoods such as Magnolia, Annisquam, and Lanesville.
