Description

This waterfront historic vacation home is centrally located in the village of Rockport and was home to John Oakes in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Completely renovated in 2015 and brought up to the highest modern standard, it retains its old world charm. It has wonderful architectural details like an oversized (ornamental) fireplace, massive oak beams, antique pine floors and an immense waterfront wraparound porch, which will be where you will want to sit and while the hours away.

Enter the house from your choice of doors on either side of the house from the wraparound porch. The formal living room, looks much as it did when Mr. Oakes was in residence, with a large charming fireplace, beams, and multipaned windows. The home is furnished with antiques hand-picked from all over the world.

In the name of modern living, a half bath has been added to the ground-floor level. Walk past the attractive antique staircase into the updated open-plan family and dining rooms and custom quartz kitchen. Spectacular french doors allow the harbor view to be seen from anywhere in this room and lead to the waterfront porch overlooking the world famous red fishing shack known as Motif Number One.

The second floor consists of a gleaming new full bath with stacked laundry units and 3 air-conditioned bedrooms to sleep a total of 6. The master bedroom is a reclaimed artist's studio, with gorgeous, massive windows and a vaulted ceiling. A double bedroom and a twin bedroom finish off this level.

Walk to everything in Rockport including the world class Shalin Liu Performance Center and the commuter rail which will take you to Boston or Salem in an hour or less. Make this beautiful vacation home your starting point for the Rockport vacation of your dreams! Off street parking for one car included.

This was our second stay at the John Oakes House and leaving it was definitely the hardest part. This year we did a lot of entertaining, having a couple friends from out of town visit, local friends and our son. So we had lots of good dinners at the long table or on the porch. And this year our first night was chilly, so we buit a fire and had dinner in front of that--very lovely! While other reviewers noted a preponderance of delicate antiques, I certainly didn't find that to be the case--but having said that, a gust of wind blew through the master bedroom, knocked over a raven statue which broke off some of his feathers...and I felt bad about that. But you couldn't find a better location for walking to everything and a view that is even better than from Arcadia House where I happily spent three months in the fall/winter of 2010! Once again, Atlantic Vacation Homes made our vacation terrific.

Good location with easy walking distance to many things. Great neighbor. Lovely home decor with a nice harbor view. Agree with prior review that screens would help with the serious onslaught of flies. Kitchen lovely. Could use mirrors in the bedrooms. Could use a half curtain on upper half of half bath window. We had a very nice time.

My wife and I (with weekend visits from adult children) had a wonderful stay at John Oakes. The house is beautifully appointed, ideally situated, and well maintained. Though the house is close to the center of things, once inside one seems far away. The neighbors are very friendly as well, but not so as to be intrusive. The porch and rockers are of course a great plus, but so is that small lawn beneath the porch. Already knowing Rockport well, we appreciated seeing it from a fresh perspective. Just 2 reservations: because of antiques in the house, it's probably not a good situation for young children; and the description should specify that only the bedrooms have air conditioners. Otherwise, it's accurately described in the promos - an exceptional vacation rental. We highly recommend it.

Almost Perfect

A well-done recent remodel of kitchen and baths makes family life in this house a breeze. We enjoyed many great meals using the grill and gas stove; high-end appliances galore. In-town location is very convenient for shopping, dining, strolling, but the street-side is busy and the harbor wakes early, so don't expect long quiet nights, as can be had further out of town. The giant master bedroom with huge windows is magical at dawn; washer/dryer in upstairs bath makes it easy to keep clothes and linens fresh. One major disappointment which should be quickly remedied: no screens on the double porch doors, the only opening on the first floor facing Sandy Bay -- crazy to offer renters a million dollar waterfront view but only in exchange for the company of the area's formidable greenhead flies. We were able to rig some mosquito netting so that we could enjoy the ocean breezes (we can sit in A/C in the Midwest, after all), but not sure that's a reasonable solution, especially for the price. Also, too much fragile clutter for our taste -- antiques are nice in shop windows, but we don't care to tiptoe around giant spinning wheels and sundry brick-a-brac in every room, and kids on vacation shouldn't have to be told not to sit on fragile antique chairs (which abound). Also many outlets are dead throughout the house, hopefully another easy fix. Minor glitches considering the superb location and modern amenities, however -- this place is well on its way to being pretty darn near perfect!
