Overview
Go back in time to the Civil War era when Brig. General Greely Curtis came to Manchester by the Sea to build his mansion on a high bluff overlooking the Atlantic, with the Boston skyline and the Cape Cod shore visible in the distance. Gothic stone arches and columns shade the patio which connects to paths leading to the shore where you can swim from "shelving rocks" or from the local neighborhood sandy beach. Located on 40 private acres, there is a clay tennis court, stables, rolling lawns and wooded glens. Little has changed from the earliest days: vegetable gardens, orchard, barns, family houses, forest, paths, and a third of a mile of shoreline beckon. When you enter the house you return to an earlier age redolent of Victorian charm and a strong family presence. Furnishings are essentially as the Curtis family left them. The mansion's magnificent staircase with carved balestrades came out of John Hancock's home in Boston. There are seven fireplaces, a large living room with handpainted murals, a sitting room, den, dining room, and, on the second and third floors, ten bedrooms, most with sea views. Six of the bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms (2 with showers, 4 with tubs). The newly renovated kitchen has two dishwashers and there are plenty of laundry facilities. A note for golf enthusiasts; the Curtis Cup was named after a daughter who grew up in the house. For poets; the General's brother-in-law was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The house is full of history and antiques with books, paintings, and memorabilia in their original locations requiring an extra level of care to avoid breakage or disturbance. A stay at the property is an extraordinary experience but bear in mind that although well-maintained, much of the house is not modern and many of its systems are almost original. We are seeking no ordinary tenant but rather occupants sympathetic to the trappings of an earlier period and willing to accommodate their lifestyle to it...something that can be not only possible, but intensely enjoyable! Beach passes for Manchester beaches available to guests for a nominal fee.
